Most moisture meters work by measuring either the resistance (Pin) dielectric constant (Pinless) of the timber. There is a strong relation ship between these measured properties and the moisture content, especially below 30% moisture content. Pinless types have the advantage of not affecting the surface of the timber being measured but are affected by the thickness of the sample, surface moisture and surface roughness. The Pin type are better for rough sawn and wet timber and by the use of extension leads can be used for continuous monitoring.
